This editorial from the State Journal Register in Springfield (another Gatehouse owned paper, by the way) is another example of what my colleagues in that neck of the woods have said for years -- that Peoria is invoked almost exclusively in the positive among many of the city leaders there. One former Springfield radio guy that covered the Springfield City Council and Sangamon County Board once said to me, "If I hear 'Why can't we be more like Peoria?' one more time, I'm going to scream!!"
Your mileage may vary. Judge for yourself. The reader comments are good, too.

I am glad you shared this. We are often lacking self esteem as a city. I thought the idea that Peoria should put aside growth and allow Bloomington/Galesburg to develop Amtrack is a good example.
Like they say, the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.
PJStar stole your idea for their editorial.
I don't know if they stole it. The PJS and SJR are both Gatehouse papers. Doubtful the Peoria folk didn't have access about it.
The people at IBI referenced this post and my blog specifically in their email newseletter, though.
