Ray LaHood will not seek reelection

Peoria Congressman Ray LaHood will announce tomorrow morning that he will step down in January 2009 at the end of his current term in office. He will not seek reelection, and will stay out of the race for his successor. He says there is no heir apparent, and the people should decide. LaHood says he is announcing early so that anyone interested can mount a campaign. He predicts the seat will stay in Republican hands.

You can hear an extensive interview with Ray LaHood by clicking here. It's also accessible through the WCBU Web Site and the WCBU News Podcast page.

Schocking.

Seriously, Jonathan, this is a good get. LaHood was talking to no one else on Thursday.

Can you tell us a little bit about how you managed to get the news in the air before everyone else?

It's hard to say Billy. I guess I would chalk it up to asking the right questions at the right time. I also think its the product of me having some level of veteran status. There aren't many people in Peoria that have been actively covering Ray for eleven consecutive years.

Great scoop, Jonathan. And good interview; you asked all the questions I would have wanted to ask.
